The Fracture

The divine deception that turned a polytheistic world into warring monotheisms, and a Rive harvest.

The Fracture is the defining event of the current age: a deliberate corruption of the bond between the guardian gods and the mortal world, engineered to ignite holy war and harvest the Rive that war produces.

What happened

Once, the two great empires accepted a polytheistic divine order, they honored the full circle of Virean guardians.

A high-ranking, corrupted Rivari changed that. Using Rivic Theurgy, it began to corrupt the divine communication between the Virean guardian gods and the mortal world, clouding and counterfeiting the messages that reach mortal ears.

Under this corruption, each empire came to believe that its own god is the only true god, and that all other worship is heresy.

The consequence

Two monotheisms, each certain the other is blasphemous, cannot coexist. The result is holy war, and holy war is a furnace of fear, betrayal, collapse, and contradiction. Every one of those is a source of concentrated Rive.

The war is not the goal. The war is the harvest. The Rivari does not care which empire wins, only that they keep generating Rive for it to consume.

Why it works

The Fracture exploits a real weakness of the Divine Plane: divine communication can be severed or faked. The guardian gods are not absent, they are being jammed.

Hooks for play

  • Players may uncover evidence that the "one true god" doctrines are a lie.
  • Restoring divine communication could be a long-arc goal.
  • The empires' war provides natural faction conflict and PvP framing.
