The World

The Syrai

The people of the Syrene Conclave, a culture of wisdom, fate, and free debate, who prize the mind over the sword.

The sword ends a quarrel. The mind ends a war. We have always chosen the longer victory.

inscribed above the Great Library of the Syrai

The Syrai are the people of the Syrene Conclave, the league of free oracle-cities of the East. They speak Syrene, they read the heavens under the god Syrios, the Far-Seer, and they believe above all else that a person is made strong not by the sword but by the mind. Where the Rukkar forge the body, the Syrai cultivate the soul and the intellect. To understand a Syrai, understand their pillars.

The pillars

1. Wisdom is the highest strength

A Syrai is raised not to endure but to understand. They prize knowledge, insight, and the examined life above muscle and steel, and a wise word above a sharp one. Their crown is the Great Library of the Syrai, the greatest store of knowledge in Caeloren, where scholars cross the world to read. To a Syrai, ignorance is the only true poverty.

2. Read the world, do not force it

The Syrai believe all things move by a pattern that can be read, and the wise do not impose their will upon the world but learn to see what comes and move with it. They read it in the stars, the smoke, and the signs, and no great choice is made without an oracle's counsel. Where a Rukkar conquers the future, a Syrai listens to it.

3. The seer and the scholar are the truest Syrai

Where the West honors the warrior above all, the East honors the seer and the scholar. The rare souls who can sit in deep meditation and behold the Divine Plane are the holiest among them, and their god, Syrios, the Far-Seer, is the patron of that sight. A Syrai dreams not of dying gloriously in battle but of seeing clearly and knowing truly.

4. Power is argued, never commanded

The Syrai bow to no crown, only to the voice of their people. Each tribe elects its leader, a Thenar, from among its seers of proven virtue, and the tribes decide together on the Synthe, the great council at Lytheon. Nothing is decreed; everything is debated and voted. And so where the Rukkar revere the finest warrior, the Syrai revere the finest orator, for in a world ruled by persuasion, the silver tongue is the true power.

5. A constellation, not a fist

A Syrai's loyalty is to his free city first and to the league of cities second, never to a single throne. They prize the independence of every tribe, and hold that their strength is not one fist but the pattern that many lights make together. Even their wars belong to the league: no city takes the continent to war without the Synthe's vote, though any city defends itself the instant it is struck. Their soldiers, the Skaei, fight light and fast, by guile and the sea, never as a wall.

6. Memory is sacred

A people who read the pattern of what comes must keep the whole record of what was. The Syrai hold on to everything: names, lineages, histories, the words of every oracle since the founding. To forget is their gravest sin, as treason is the West's. The Great Library is the temple of that memory, and a Syrai who sets true knowledge into it is honored as a Rukkar is honored for a great victory.

The hidden truth

The Syrai believe they simply love wisdom and freedom. They do not know that they are the mortal echo of a cosmic force: where the Rukkar embody Vire, order and endurance, the Syrai embody Rive, not the Hollow's corruption, but the necessary Rive: change, renewal, and the restless flux that keeps a world from going stiff and dead. The two empires are the living halves of the world's balance, and they were meant to complete each other. The Fracture set them to tear each other apart instead. That is the deepest wound the Hollow ever made: it turned the world's two necessary forces into each other's executioners.
